Patient financial advocates can help make healthcare accessible.

As a physician, it’s important to me that my patients, and potential patients, are able to receive care when they need it without worrying about the cost.

Some patients who don’t have insurance, or those who have insurance but are concerned about the cost of care, often forgo making appointments or seeking treatment out of fear of being saddled with healthcare debt — one of the foremost reasons for filing for bankruptcy.

At Cleveland Clinic Euclid Hospital, there are resources available to help our patients afford the care they need.

Patient financial advocates can help patients through:
● Pre- and post-service assistance — providing estimates, offering financial assistance, setting up payment plans.
● Financial assistance programs that offer various levels of assistance based on your income and family size.
● Help with Medicaid application, which can assist Ohio residents who may be eligible to enroll for federal healthcare aid.

Patients also need to be empowered. If you have health insurance, make sure you know what is covered and make sure your healthcare provider and the facility where you’ll receive treatment are within your network — those are just a few things you can do to reduce healthcare costs.

And, remember, avoiding medical debt doesn’t have to mean avoiding medical care — it’s important to be proactive with your healthcare.
